2025 has posed significant challenges and transitions for the Chinese Rhenish Church Hong Kong Synod Social Service Department (CRC). The government's implementation of the “Productivity Enhancement Programme” will result in an approximately HK$14 million reduction in funding over the next three years. Simultaneously, the demand for mental health services, family support, and elderly care continues to grow. We are experiencing increasing social needs while the resources available to address them are becoming more constrained. During economic transition and mounting social pressures, we are reminded of the value of every contribution and every resource entrusted to us.

It is precisely during these times that the importance of social services becomes even more apparent. After the unfortunate incident at Wang Fuk Court at the end of the year, our colleagues took the initiative to engage with the community, offering emotional support and companionship to residents affected. While we cannot change what happened, we hope that our timely assistance and presence will help those affected feel less alone.

Despite the challenges, we continue to explore innovative service approaches. This year, we showcased our “Five-Senses Virtual Travel Programme” at the S+ Expo. Through immersive sensory experiences, elderly residents in care homes were able to “travel beyond Hong Kong” and rediscover the joy of exploration, thereby enhancing their quality of life and sense of well-being. The programme was subsequently shortlisted for the “Good Social Service Story” initiative organized by the Connecting Hearts, providing new inspiration for residential care services.

In youth services, the Choi Wan Integrated Children and Youth Service Centre participated in the “21C@JC” initiative. Young people were actively involved in planning and designing their own space, transforming the centre into an environment that truly belongs to them. I was deeply moved when the youth presented their ideas on stage at the opening ceremony. This was not merely a renovation of a facility; it was a process through which young people rediscovered their sense of belonging.

We have also continued to expand cross-sector partnerships and to develop resources. With the support of DBS Bank, we became one of five organizations in Hong Kong selected to promote financial literacy programs. These programs help grassroots families plan their finances while strengthening family communication and relationships. Additionally, through collaboration with the IFoundation Hong Kong, we introduced non-contact boxing training for stroke survivors and individuals living with Parkinson’s disease to help improve their physical capacity and confidence. We also organized the calligraphy exhibition “With Love, I Believe There Is a Way,” in which elderly participants shared their life stories through handwritten Cantonese song lyrics, encouraging the community to find strength and healing even in difficult times.

These achievements would not have been possible without the dedication and professionalism of our team. This year, Ms. Poon Yee Mei Centre-in-Charge of the Shatin Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, received the “Outstanding Staff Award in Elderly Services (Professional)” at the 7th Elderly Services Awards. This recognition honours her personal contributions and reflects the CRC colleagues' longstanding commitment to quality service.

As a Christian social service organization, we believe that serving others involves not only meeting their needs but also walking alongside them during difficult times. The Bible reminds us in Matthew 5:16: “ In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This verse encourages us to engage with society through professionalism, compassion, and action, so that our service may bring hope and help others recognize that God is still at work among us.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the government, foundations, corporate partners, church members, and community stakeholders for their ongoing support and trust. Each service initiative and every life transformed is made possible through the partnership and collaboration of many.

Looking ahead, while the social environment remains uncertain, we firmly believe that by staying true to our mission, continuing to innovate, and strengthening collaboration, social services can still play a vital role during times of change. Let us continue to be a source of light in the world. May more people find that “At Rhenish, there is a place for your happiness.”
