Chairman's Message

ELDER WONG WAI

CHAIRMAN of SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT

2025 has been a significant year for us to pause and reflect on our future direction. Amid rapid social change, tightening public resources, and an increasingly pressured community, we must ask: how should social service organizations meaningfully respond to society's needs during such challenging times? What mission and role do the Chinese Rhenish Church Hong Kong Synod Social Service Department (the CRC) hold in this era?

Over the past year, we have deeply felt that social needs have not diminished; instead, they have become more urgent. Many people are seeking direction amidst uncertainty. The pace of life continues to quicken, and societal instability grows stronger. In these circumstances, care, companionship, and support become even more essential.

As a faith-based social service organization, we have long upheld the principle of "Imitating Christ, Caring for the Community" as the core of our mission. The Bible reminds us in Matthew 11:29: "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." This verse reminds us that although the Lord does not promise a life free from burdens, He invites us to learn from His humility and gentleness. By doing so, we can find true peace and blessings even amid life's challenges.

In an ever-changing environment, organizations may need to adjust strategies and optimize resource use. Yet, even more critical is the steadfast commitment to our founding values and mission. We believe that social service is not merely about providing support; it is about accompanying people through difficult journeys. When services maintain warmth amid pressure and uphold human dignity within systems, they can provide enduring and stabilizing strength to society.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all our staff and volunteers who continue to serve faithfully, despite the many demands they face. I also extend my sincere gratitude to the government, foundations, corporate partners, church members, and community stakeholders who have supported us over the years. It is through this shared trust and partnership that CRC can continue to respond to society's needs and bring support and hope to various communities.

While challenges may still lie ahead, we remain committed to moving forward with humility and professionalism. May the service of the CRC continue to be a channel through which people experience care, hope, and the One who grants true rest.
